Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have reportedly repelled an ambush by suspected armed Berom militia during a security operation in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to security sources quoted by Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday after troops received reports of gunfire in the Gero area of Jos South.
The sources said troops attached to Sector 3 were mobilised to support personnel of Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace already operating in the area.
While attempting to link up with the other troops, security personnel reportedly came under ambush from suspected armed militia members who allegedly tried to surround them from nearby mountainous locations.
Troops were said to have responded with what sources described as superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat toward Nyango and Daron communities in Jos South Local Government Area.
Military sources disclosed that troops expended ammunition during the exchange while continuing pursuit operations across the affected area.
Following the confrontation, security personnel reportedly confirmed that nine cows were killed while five others sustained gunshot injuries during the attack on herders.
The latest violence comes amid recurring security concerns in parts of Plateau State involving clashes between armed groups, herders and local communities.
Security sources further noted that troops in neighbouring Mangu Local Government Area had recently come under attack while responding to unrest linked to illegal mining activities.
