CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — A devastating fire at a popular après-ski bar in the Swiss resort town of Crans-Montana has claimed the lives of 40 people and injured over 100 others, authorities confirmed this morning.
The blaze broke out late Tuesday night during a crowded event, reportedly caused by indoor pyrotechnics that ignited soundproofing material on the ceiling. “It happened in seconds,” said witness Jonas Weber. “The room filled with black smoke, and there was a rush for the single exit.”
Swiss President Viola Amherd has declared a national day of mourning. Emergency crews from across the canton of Valais, including helicopters, worked through the night to evacuate the injured. Investigators have sealed off the site and are questioning the venue’s owners regarding safety code violations.
