Watch: Tom Cruise Is Officially Strapped in for Top Gun 3: Everything to Know
It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot.
And for the Top Gun franchise, while now two installments have successfully greased the landing, Tom Cruise is the ultimate wingman at the heart of the story—and he’s taking off for one more mission.
Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon that not only is a third Top Gun on the way, but it’s currently in development with Tom set to reprise his role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Also returning is producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Screenwriter Ehren Kruger—who cowrote the franchise’s second installment Top Gun: Maverick—was previously revealed to be attached to the third movie in 2024.
Despite the 36 years separating the first Top Gun movie—starring Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis and Anthony Edwards—from Maverick, the likes of Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman made the sequel equally as captivating as the first.
In fact, out of the many films and franchises Tom has helmed over the years, the high-flying sequel is his top-grossing, raking in upwards of $1.4 billion worldwide during its 2022 release.
And though specific details—such as the film’s release date as well as which other actors are attached to it, remain up in the air—there’s one person who has long had faith the third movie will meet all expectations: the man behind Maverick’s antagonist-turned-good-guy, Glen .
“There are smarter people involved in this movie, than I can come up with,” he told E! News in 2024 about a potential premise for the third movie. “But whatever it is, I know we’re going to be flying cool stuff, that’s all I know.”

But for the 37-year-old—who has been candid about his admiration for Tom and the close bond the pair have developed in recent years—being able to play Hangman in the phenomenon that was Top Gun: Maverick was a bucket-list experience.
“It’s really nice when you make a movie that people want to see more, that’s been honestly the really cool part about this,” he said. “You make a movie with people you really love, that you really connect with, and then maybe you get the chance to do it again.”
Back in 2024, when it was confirmed a third Top Gun would be on the way, Jerry did share whatever tidbits he could as producer.

“[Director] Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it,” he told ScreenRantin March of that year, “and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it.”
And while Jerry noted that Tom’s busy schedule complicated when the film might be able to get made, there was never a question that the Mission Impossible star might not be involved.
As he put it, “It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing.”
In the meantime, keep reading to see where the original Top Gun stars’ careers took them.
