Watch: Tom Cruise Is Unrecognizable in Shocking Digger Transformation
Tom Cruise has long accepted his mission of going above and beyond for movies.
And the Top Gun star isn’t worried about having gained a reputation over his disciplined work ethic.
“When I’m working with people, I’m not afraid to, as I’m acting, to look foolish, to do it,” Cruise told GQ in an interview published Sept. 15. “I work hard, and people that work with me, they know. I expect a lot and I’m up-front about it. It’s like, ‘The rumors are true. And do you want this?'”
Given the actor’s acclaimed history of making Hollywood hits for over 40 years, it’s no surprise the Syracuse native, who moved to Los Angeles at age 18, recalls being creatively inclined as a young child.
“Even when I was a kid, they were like, ‘Oh, come on, Tom. You’re so intense,'” Cruise continued. “I’m like, ‘I don’t know what to say. I am intense.’ I got a very good sense of humor about it.”
As such, the Mission: Impossible actor has identified where his attention to detail stems from. As he put it, “When I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it. And you want to blast through the confusion and kind of build up that ability.”
Indeed, Cruise has completed multiple dangerous stunts himself—like jumping between two roof ledges in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and flying a fighter jet in Top Gun: Maverick—throughout his storied career. But that doesn’t mean he has no fear.
“I know it’s not for everybody. I don’t think it is,” the 64-year-old remarked about his death-defying stunts. “And you know what? Everyone has their own things, what they have to confront in life and what they feel is scary or whatever.”

He also has no time for rumors about his personal life.
“I’m not sitting here thinking about that stuff. I never think about that,” Cruise—dad to kids Isabella Jane, 33, and Connor, 31, with Nicole Kidman and daughter Suri Noelle, 20, with Katie Holmes—shared. “I’m more looking out. For me, I’m more in present and future.”
And when it comes to the past, the action star only looks back to “evaluate how I can do things better. Where I’m going, ‘What worked and what didn’t work?’ I can look back at things in a joyful way.”
That’s why Cruise still has such a lust for life. As he put it, “There’s so much life, and there’s always another dream. I think that a person without a dream, they’ve decided not to live.”

So, what does he think of the “last real movie star” title cinephiles have given him?
“I have to say there’s really talented actors,” he confessed, before praising Brad Pitt for being a “great actor, great star, great charisma.”
Cruise continued, “And there’s many, many, many. I’m on the set with great craftsmen as a young kid.”
