A taxi driver had their car impounded for a week after being caught for excessive speed on the Sea to Sky Highway on Monday, ironically while transporting a fare who had had their own vehicle impounded for the same infraction.

A B.C. Highway Patrol motorcycle operator clocked a white Toyota Corolla doing 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Monday near Porteau Cove, pulling over what turned out to be a taxi.

The 65-year-old Squamish resident driving the taxi had their work vehicle impounded for seven days and was fined $368. He will also see his insurance hit with three years of high-risk driver premiums that will bring the total costs to more than $2,000.

“Professional drivers do not get a pass to disobey the law. They are expected to know better,” said RCMP Sgt. Michael McLaughlin. “Passengers also have every right to politely ask their drivers to obey the law. If you’re not comfortable with a taxi or ride-share driver speeding or driving distracted, say something.”

The taxi was one of 21 vehicles that the RCMP impounded for excessive speed on the Sea to Sky over the Labour Day weekend.
