Watch: Lisa Kudrow Seemingly Confirms Shocking Amount of Money ‘Friends’ Cast Still Makes Every Year
The money wasn’t always there for the cast of Friends.
Not that the reported $22,500-per-episode that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer were each making when the show premiered in 1994 is anything to laugh at, then or now.
But they learned there was power in numbers and, once they joined forces to negotiate as a group starting in 1996, their salaries started climbing ever higher before reaching a whopping $1 million-per-episode—as in $22 million for a 22-episode season—in 2002.
Or as LeBlanc put it to Details in 2011, “You know there’s that saying that you make your f–k-you money in Hollywood? I made that.”
And apparently he’s still making it.
Kudrow was recently asked why she and her fellow costars are still paid $20 million a year in residuals, 22 years after the show’s 10th and final season aired on NBC.
“Because Phoebe Buffay was so great?” the Comeback actress cracked in an interview with The Times published April 23. Though, on a more serious note, Perry’s death in 2023 had prompted her to rewatch the show and, Kudrow shared, “for the first time I truly appreciated just how great it was.”
In theory, greatness doesn’t always come with a $20 million price tag. But Friends was a massive hit then, remained a must-watch in syndication and is still one of streamer HBO Max’s most popular shows.

“The rationale is that the show is actually generating an enormous amount of money, and…it’s affordable,” Kudrow said on HuffPost Live in 2014, when Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons‘ Big Bang Theory pay raise drew comparisons to what the Central Perk crew pulled off. “It’s affordable to whatever entity has to pay it.”
And when it comes to a series that’s character-driven, the Emmy winner added, “I don’t think it’s out of line to ask that, you know, ‘Make me a partner in this endeavor in some way.'”
But million-dollar deals aren’t actually the norm in Hollywood—even for movie stars sometimes—so take a moment to invest in what these celebrities have revealed about their paychecks:
