Tuesday’s opening of the new Chanel boutique at Oakridge Park drew a lineup of shoppers eager to see what was in store.

Measuring 750-square-metres, it’s the first store in Canada to have the full Chanel “universe” including fragrance and beauty, watches and fine jewelry, and fashion. It’s the second boutique in Vancouver for the luxury French fashion house and among its largest in Canada.

Waiting since 7:30 a.m. for the noon store opening, shoppers toward the front of the queue shared they had lined up in the hopes of snagging a specific piece.

“I’m looking for a green Chanel 25,” one shopper shared, referencing the brand’s popular shoulder bag design. Launching with the buzzed-about Métiers d’art collection by artistic director Matthieu Blazy, other shoppers waiting in line shared they had come with the hopes of scoring a style from that particular coveted range.

Designed by Peter Marino, the new boutique features a few design elements that are exclusive to the Oakridge Park location, as well as added highlights, such as a statement-making crystal Goossens chandelier.

The Chanel boutique is among a second wave of luxury boutiques that are opening at Oakridge Park following its big reveal on May 28. Acne Studios and Alexander Wang are among the additional stores that have opened to shoppers since the grand opening event. The shopping centre component of Oakridge Park is planned to include more than 650,000 square feet of retail and dining, and some 100 boutiques. So far, approximately 500,000 square feet of the retail is open to shoppers.

Arriving before the mall opening time of 10 a.m., people milled around the space, many heading up toward the Time Out Market to grab a coffee or bite at Beaucoup Bakery, one of the only food vendors in the space to open before the broader 11 a.m. start time. Ribbons of stanchions remain ready for crowd control outside the dining hall, which has continued to see crowds since opening.

Both a security guard at the shopping centre and the mall concierge noted the traffic to the mall has been steady since the debut last month. Perhaps a little too busy on weekends, one employee remarked with a slight grimace, as curious shoppers continue to flock to Oakridge Park on Saturday and Sunday to see what’s new.

The sprawling development at Cambie Street and West 41st Avenue includes a mall, residential towers, office space and a public park contained within a 28-acre footprint. The full development is planned to be open by the fall.
