Watch: Taylor Swift Performs at Academy Museum Gala With Kim Kardashian, Connor Storrie in Attendance
Taylor Swift knew it, she knew the tune.
However, the Grammy winner recently shared that before she agreed to saddle up and write the original song “I Knew It, I Knew You” for Toy Story 5, she had to make sure no one else would get booted from the project.
That’s because Swift was initially approached about writing the end credits song while she was on her record-breaking Eras Tour, but she put off taking the meeting until months after it ended so that she could rest.
“I was repeatedly asking, ‘I know that it took me a couple months to come back to this project. Be honest: did you guys replace me?’” the 36-year-old recalled of the meeting during a Nov. 1 Q&A. “‘I don’t want to kick somebody off of this project that you reached out to after [me] because I understand, but I’m not in the business of doing that.’”
But the “Cardigan” singer soon realized she was patient zero.
“I found out that there was no other person on your mood board,” she said alongside director Andrew Stanton during the joint Q&A. “Everybody said, ‘No, we just decided there wasn’t going to be an end credit song [if you didn’t do it].’”

So, Swift went to infinity and beyond to make sure she and her cowriter Jack Antonoff captured the Pixar film’s story.
“When I saw this brilliant film that Andrew made, I realized exactly why he knew I would love it,” she explained. “It’s centered around Jesse, who’s my favorite character, and it deals with female friendship.”
And as Swift put it, “It’s crazy how I could see a way into all the characters in a way, and it was like a struck-by-lightning moment of like, ‘I have to go home, get to my piano, and write this song, because I know exactly what I would want to say if I had you know the privilege of writing for this.’”
