As it does each year at this time, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has revealed the increase in the health insurance premiums that residents of Switzerland will pay in 2027.
The average rate will be 0.6 percent higher than this year’s.
It will amount, on average, to 412 francs a month for the basic compulsory insurance for an adult, though premiums will vary from one cantons to another (see below), and will also depend on individual policies.
It will rise by 4.8 percent for young adults and 4.6 percent for children.
The national increase will represent an additional 19.70 francs per month on average.
The FOPH attributed the increase primarily to the proliferation of treatments, medical advances, and the aging of the population.
Cantonal differences
The 412-franc monthly payment is the national average, but this amount will be higher or lower depending on the canton of residence.
That’s because cantons have different health infrastructure and levels of government funding.
And demographics comes into play as well: health premiums in cantons with younger and healthier population will be lower than in those with higher incidence of disease, and older, chronically ill people.
Significant disparities
Residents of Jura will experience the sharpest increase, at 6.6 percent, followed by Schaffhausen (6.4 percent).
The population of Aargau will also see rates above the national average (5.6 percent), as will Bern (5.4 percent).
On the other hand, the premium will rise by ‘only’ 4.5 percent in Basel-City, 4.4 in Geneva, and 3.5. in Vaud – the smallest increase in the country.
