A search continued on Monday after a woman swimming in Stamp River Provincial Park north of Port Alberni was swept away by strong currents.

At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Port Alberni RCMP were called about the swimmer and began a search along with other first responders. She wasn’t located.

On Monday, police were joined by Alberni Valley Rescue Squad and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue in an expanded search for the swimmer, said RCMP Const. Beth O’Connor.

A section of the trail near the waterfalls was closed to allow crews to operate but the provincial park remained open.

The area around the falls is popular for its lush forests, rapids and lookouts where visitors can watch salmon fighting their way upstream in late summer.

However, swimming can be treacherous because of strong currents and slippery rocks, and is not allowed within the provincial park — though tubing and swimming is popular further downstream.
