Watch: Jeff Probst Fiercely Defends ‘Survivor 50’ From Zac Brown Backlash
Jeff Probst is standing by his alliance with Zac Brown.
After many Survivor fans were upset over the amount of screen time the country singer received on a recent episode of the show’s 50th season, the longtime Survivor host addressed the criticism.
“It’s fascinating to me that a couple of people, most of them either former players or people who will never play, criticize the show, and it gets momentum,” Jeff, 64, told Variety in an interview published May 13. “I tell anyone who wants to listen: If that’s your goal, to somehow impact our point of view, it will fail. We trust what we’re doing.”
He emphasized, “If you think we’re going to re-edit because you thought there was too much Zac Brown, you’ve not been reading interviews with me.”
Indeed, the Emmy winner—who has hosted Survivor since its inception and has been the showrunner since 2010— wasn’t kidding around.
“I couldn’t be more serious,” he explained. “I love Survivor. I love joy. I love fans. I’ve also got a backbone. It’s gonna take more than that to knock me over.”
Much of the backlash online revolved around the amount of time Zac—who is one of Jeff’s close friends—was featured in the season’s fourth episode, with viewers calling out the discrepancy of the “Chicken Fried” singer’s screen time to that of other players on social media.
After all, during his appearance on the March 18 episode, Zac—who flew to Fiji for his cameo—was featured in four solo confessionals and was a reward prize for the winners of an immunity challenge. The Zac Brown Band frontman not only went spearfishing to feed the winners himself, but he also performed for them while they enjoyed the food.
And many people took issue with Zac’s individual screen time after other players, such as Season 46’s Tiffany Ervin, appeared to be less seen as a result, which was pointed out by Season 37 alum Angelina Keely, who also returned for the 50th season, in a viral March 27 Instagram post.
“We expect Tiffany to have more confessionals than a random celeb that no one asked to see,” she wrote in part. “We expect more than old basic stereotypes.”

While Jeff admitted that he would have changed Zac’s cameo to be intertwined into a game twist instead of being a reward, he denied rumors that the producers cut down following Season 50 celebrity appearances—which included cameos from Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson and Jimmy Fallon—in the wake of the criticism over Zac’s visit.
In fact, the showrunner called the claims “absolutely, unequivocally false,” telling Variety, “We’re a month and a half ahead in episodes. We don’t edit week-to-week. We’ve changed nothing.”
