Surrey police are seeking more information about a man who was arrested and charged earlier this month in an extortion-related shooting.

Police got a call on April 13 around 3 p.m. reporting gunfire near a home at 94A Avenue and 127th Street.

Officers found damage to a home, though no one inside at the time of the shooting was injured.

SPS’s extortion investigators identified a suspicious vehicle and obtained a search warrant in the weeks following, leading to one arrest.

“This arrest and charge reflect the determined work of our officers to hold those responsible for gun violence accountable,” said Chief Const. Norm Lipinski.

“Discharging a firearm into an occupied home is an extremely serious offence, and while we are thankful no one was physically harmed, incidents like this are profoundly dangerous and frightening for those affected.”

Surrey police are releasing Saroye’s image in hopes that those with information about his activities will come forward to speak with investigators.

In the first three months of the year, the city of Surrey recorded 75 extortion threats and 14 shots-fired incidents.

Extortion threats have been a continuing concern in recent years, particularly in the South Asian business community where businesses and homes have been targeted in shooting incidents.

A number of task forces have been established at the municipal, provincial and federal levels to probe the shootings and threats, while the City of Surrey has put up $250,000 for resources to fight extortion crime in the city.

Meanwhile, a suspect in a Downtown Eastside fatal stabbing has been charged.

James Andrew Slater, 49, diedafter being stabbed near East Hastings and Columbia streets.

After the stabbing, a man and woman were arrested.

On Thursday, police announced Braden Levine Ollenberger, 27, was charged with second-degree murder. He remains in custody.
