Shots were fired early Wednesday in Surrey’s 17th extortion-related shooting this year.

There were reports of a shooting near 57th Avenue and 148th Street in Newton at around 4:40 a.m., the Surrey Police Service said.

Police found damage to a house and evidence that shots were fired. There were people inside the home at the time. No one was injured.

While the investigation is in the early stages, police believe the shooting was extortion-related.

Police declined to say whether the house has been targeted before.
