Watch: Shirley MacLaine, 92, Makes Rare Appearance in Video Message
Shirley MacLaine is doing some Sweet Charity.
Quite literally, the Steel Magnoliasstar made an extremely rare appearance in a video to promote the Southampton Playhouse screening of her 1969 film.
“Hi Southampton Playhouse, wish I could be with you.” MacLaine said in a video shared to the New York theater’s Instagram account Aug. 17 to promote an upcoming screening of the film. “I would like to see Sweet Charity again. While you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked.”
True to her comedic timing, MacLaine joked of the film’s bust at the box office, adding, “between you and me it didn’t do very well so I hope you guys like it.”
While the 92-year-old appeared as a ball of energy in the video—sporting her signature oversized glasses paired with a red vest and a blue long-sleeved T-shirt—she has kept an extremely low profile in the last year.
In fact, beyond an occasional lunch outing in Malibu, MacLaine’s last major public appearance was in December, when she was honored at the Inaugural Dance Hall of Fame ceremony alongside Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Kenny Ortega.
At the time, the Terms of Endearment actress—whose younger brother Warren Beatty, 89, followed in her acting footsteps—credited her impressive dancing skills for what has kept her youthful spirit alive.
“My mother took me to dancing class when I was three because I had weak ankles and I fell in love with it,” MacLaine mused upon accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award. “But here’s what it also included: discipline, love of music, a sense of cooperation with other people, being on time.”

While The Apartment actress was also known for her comedic chops, it’s dance that she credits with the life she built for herself.
“I went to class every day until in my sixties,” MacLaine continued. “I would have to say that dance, what I’ve learned being part of it is why I’m still here.”
As for MacLaine’s secret for a long happy life?
“I would recommend if anybody out there is wondering what to do with their life, I would recommend ballet class,” she emphasized. “I’m not kidding. That’s what I learned.”

Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi have since moved to the Cotswolds, deciding to stay put in November 2024 after Donald Trump‘s reelection, the talk show host told to Richard Bacon in a July 2025 conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham.”It’s absolutely beautiful,” she gushed about the English countryside, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” Ellen continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
