Watch: Sharon Stone Reveals Ex-Husband’s “Furious” Reaction to Breast Removal Ended Their Marriage
Sharon Stone had an instinct her previous marriage had run its course.
The Basic Instinct actress revealed that she ended her marriage because of the way her ex-husband reacted to her early 2000s decision to have a bilateral mastectomy to remove a tumor from her breast.
“One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast,” Stone recalled of the tumor on the June 1 episode of David Begnaud’s The Person Who Believed in Me podcast. “And the doctor had come out to my house and said, ‘Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they’re all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they’re cancer.’”
But the 68-year-old could not comprehend the idea of having breast cancer, telling her doctor, “’I don’t have cancer.’”
“He said, ‘You don’t get to decide that,’” she recalled. “I said, ‘I do. I do get to decide that. I’m deciding. But I am deciding that I will have a bilateral, because I’m not f–king around.’”
However, Stone said her then-husband—who she didn’t name—was not expecting her to make that choice.
“My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’” she said. “And got up and left the room.”
When Begnaud asked her what her ex thought was ridiculous, she responded, “That I would have a bilateral. He was furious.”

The host asked, “Not that the cancer—if it was true—might kill you?”
“No, no,” Stone replied, with Begnaud noting her ex was more “mad about the breasts being removed.”
But as Stone shared, her doctor turned to her husband and said, “‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down.’ And I said, ‘I make the decisions, not you.’”
“That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over,” the Oscar nominee said. “It was just over in the room. You could just tell. It was over.”

“He thought I was ridiculous,” she added. “He thought it was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself.”
Thankfully, Stone’s tumors turned out to be benign.
While the Casino star did not name anyone in the interview, she was married to second husband PhilBronstein from 1998 to 2004, with the two adopting son Roan, 26, in 2000. She was previously married to television Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990. She later adopted sons Laird, 21, and Quinn, 20.
E! News has reached out to Bronstein for comment but has not heard back.
