    Watch: Shailene Woodley Gives Cryptic Update on ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3

    Shailene Woodley might be making waves in Monterey once again.

    The Big Little Lies star hinted that she’s planning to return for season three of the HBO drama after author Liane Moriarty revealed that her new book Big Little Truths will inspire a third installment of the TV show.

    “That’s what I hear,” Woodley—with a coy smile—told E! News of the upcoming third season during an exclusive interview at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Sept. 6. “So, I’m going to continue throwing that rumor mill out there and feeding it. You know, that it is happening.”

    Indeed, while no cast has been officially announced, Moriarty revealed that producers Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and creator David E. Kelley have given the project their stamp of approval.  

    “The producers have read it,” Moriarty told E! News in August. “They said nice things.” 

    Confirming that season three is “definitely in active, enthusiastic development,” she noted, “Hopefully, hopefully they will start filming sooner rather than later.”

    Still, Moriarty is expecting producers to make “huge changes” from the book to the show, though it’s expected to roughly follow the plot of the novel, which takes place after the group of wealthy California moms celebrate the 50th birthday party of Madeline (Witherspoon). 

    “Their principal’s office receives a severed finger in the mail,” Liane told USA Today of the plot. “The first thing that happens is they say, ‘Well, it all began at Madeline’s 50th birthday.’”

    “When a strange man begins lurking around the school asking supposedly innocent questions,” the book’s description reads, “this tightly connected group of women must finally face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have and haven’t shared with their kids.”

    Variety previously reported that Witherspoon and Kidman are expected to reprise their roles, but it hasn’t been announced if Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Meryl Streep will return.

    In the meantime, Woodley is celebrating the major success of another project of hers: winning her first-ever Emmy for her role in season two of Paradise, as she picked up the trophy forGuest Actress in a Drama Series on Sept. 6. 

    “When I was growing up as an actor, my mom created this idea of a ladder, where she was like, ‘You got your first callback—that’s one ring on the ladder. Oh, you booked your first commercial? That’s another ring on the ladder,'” she told E!. “And this just feels like another ring on the ladder. I get to go home and have a conversation with my mama, where I’m like, ‘I got the Emmy. We can put that on the ladder now.'”

    Her mom Lori Woodley continues to play a big role in her life, as she noted, “I wouldn’t be here without her in every way. I’m just stoked. I just feel so lucky. I love what I do, and I never take it for granted.”

    Of course, her mom is beyond proud of the Divergent actress for continuing to score all kinds of goals.

    “She currently has all of the trophies from when I was a soccer player as a child, like, Teen Choice Awards,” Woodley said, adding of her Emmy, “but I think I might keep this one.”
