WASHINGTON D.C. (Politico) — The Senate Judiciary Committee began high-stakes hearings today on the “Artificial Intelligence Safety and Transparency Act of 2026.”
The bipartisan bill seeks to establish federal standards for AI watermarking, data privacy, and algorithmic accountability. Tech CEOs and ethics experts are scheduled to testify throughout the week.
“We are in the Wild West era of AI, and it is time for the sheriff to arrive,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in his opening statement. Critics of the bill argue that heavy-handed regulation could stifle American innovation and cede ground to international competitors.
