Watch: Selma Blair Shares Why She’s Stopped Drinking Alcohol
Selma Blair has cut alcohol out of her life.
The Legally Blonde actress reflected on her past relationship with the substance and how she used to drink to cope with her multiple sclerosis pain before ultimately breaking the habit.
“It’s wild the times that I’ve gone, even as a very young girl, to alcohol,” Blair said on the Oct. 20 episode of The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show, which host Jenny McCarthy explained was recorded before Blair’s recent flight incident. “I was, even at a young age, using it for the headaches, using it to calm down.”
Then the 54-year-old realized that drinking felt like the only solution to the nerve pain from her MS, an autoimmune disease that attacks nerve fibers, according to the Mayo Clinic.
As she put it, “It was the one thing that could take you from this to chill.”
However, Blair soon recognized the depths to which she was going to numb the pain.
“Then, you know, one glass isn’t enough; two glasses isn’t great,” she shared. “Three’s better, four is horrible, and five, you know, I [was] just depressive.”
So, Blair accepted, “It just wasn’t going to lead me to the right place.”
And while the Cruel Intentions star emphasized she doesn’t live a “sober, sober lifestyle with AA,” she noted, “Drinking I cannot do. Alcohol is not good medicine for me.”
Blair previously detailed her struggle with alcohol in her 2022 memoir Mean Baby. In the book, she recalled, “The desire to drink as much as I could, as often as I could, stayed with me and did not let me go for more than 20 years.”

That addiction came to a head in 2016 after she passed out on a plane while traveling with her then-4-year-old son Arthur Bleick and her ex Jason Bleick, an incident she later apologized for, citing a mixture of alcohol and medication.
“Public humiliation and the thing that made me really stop drinking was that I could’ve died on that plane,” Blair said on the Todayshow in 2022. “I mean now that I was a mother, it just changed everything.”
She added, “It’s gone from me. I’m not cocky about it. You have to always be vigilant. But it’s really gone.”
Earlier this month, Blair experienced another mid-flight incident, which her rep referred to as “a medical emergency,” during which two flight attendants reported injuries. The actress was then arrested on two counts of assault in the second degree for allegedly kicking a police officer and a nurse after her flight landed in New York City.
Blair has since pleaded not guilty to the charges.
