Watch: Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock Reunite in ‘Practical Magic 2’ First Look
Some curses can break through the most powerful loves.
Unfortunately, it appears this is the fate that befell Aidan Quinn’s dreamy Investigator Gary Hallet ahead of Practical Magic 2.
After all, Quinn, who played the love interest to Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens in Practical Magic, was noticeably absent from the sequel trailer when it released on April 20. And Bullock read the tea leaves when it came to his exclusion.
While confirming her character was single again as she and Nicole Kidman were presenting Practical Magic 2 at CinemaCon on April 14, she quipped, according to Entertainment Weekly, “If you know the original film, you can probably guess why.”
For those uninitiated, Practical Magic follows the plight of sisters Sally and Gillian Owens (Kidman), the latest in a line of women who have been cursed by an ancestor to watch all of their lovers die. Sally had already felt this heartbreak before meeting Gary, with her first husband—and father to her two daughters—meeting an untimely demise.
Ultimately, in the 1998 film, Gary and Sally get together, despite the witch’s fears of dooming her man. But although in the first movie Gary insisted that “curses only have power when you believe them,” the Owens curse seems to be more powerful than the couple hoped.
The trailer hints at Gary’s death in the intervening years, with the sisters explaining the fates of their past romances to a newcomer (Lee Pace).
“Everyone we love dies,” Sally said, with Gillian adding, “A really horrible death. It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”

As for Quinn, he had expressed interest in returning to coastal Massachusetts for another round of midnight margaritas, admittingin a Februaryinterview with SPIN 1038, “I would have said yes, but I wasn’t asked.”
Luckily, there’s no bad blood between the Desperately Seeking Susan star and the rest of the Practical Magic coven.
“They were both great to work with,” he shared. “You know, most of my stuff was with Sandy [Bullock], but they were both phenomenal to work with. We had a good time.”
