    Sam Smith Confirms Engagement to Christian Cowan

    Watch: Sam Smith Reveals Met Gala 2026 Outfit Weighed 52 Pounds

    Sam Smith is no longer dancing with a stranger.

    After all, the “Unholy” singer is engaged to Christian Cowan after three years of dating, confirming to New York Times in an interview published July 28 that the fashion designer is their fiancé.

    Smith also shared that the title of their Aug. 21 album Hazel Eyes is a nod to the color of Cowan’s irises, with several songs on the 12-track LP centered around their relationship.

    “For me, there’s something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs,” the 34-year-old told the outlet. “I’m not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving.”

    But Smith is also a muse for Cowan, 32, as well. In fact, the Grammy winner wore a 52-pound feathered ensemble designed by their partner to the 2026 Met Gala earlier this year.

    “This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration,” Cowan explained in a May Instagram post, “and to my love, Sam.”

    And for Smith, there was no one better to design the dramatic piece.

    “There’s no one who knows my body more than this man,” the “Stay With Me” artist emphasized to Vogue in a joint interview with Cowan. “I feel very lucky to be here and to wear your incredible talent like this. It’s amazing.”

    The couple’s romance also served as inspiration for Cowan when he was designing Smith’s 2024 Met Gala outfit: a black tuxedo with a chiffon skirt cinched together with rose dipped in 24-carat gold and sterling silver.

    “I gravitated toward the English rose,” Cowan told Vogue that year, “something celebrating both Sam and I’s heritage.”

    Smith added in the same interview, “I always feel beautiful whenever I wear Christian’s clothes, both inside and out.”
