Russia summit: Putin slams neo-colonial exploitation of Africa’s resources

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday condemned the economic imperialism practised by some developed nations and transnational corporations, accusing them of ripping off Africa.

Speaking at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, Putin stated that his country does not engage in “predatory, neo-colonial exploitation of natural and human resources.”

The Head of State said Russia, instead, expands domestic processing of raw materials, thereby contributing to the local and national economy through job creation and revenue generation.

Noting that Africa is asserting itself as a key player in the global economy and politics, Putin observed resistance from nations refusing to accept reality, being accustomed to their colonial past.

The President also hosted a reception in honour of heads of delegations at the Kremlin, where he affirmed Russia’s commitment to help Africa in its fight against terrorism, extremism, and epidemics.

Putin expressed Moscow’s willingness to actively participate in efforts to resolve current crises, prevent new hotbeds of tension, and ensure food, digital and environmental security.

He recalled how the Soviet Union’s assistance encouraged the peoples of Africa to free themselves from “the shackles of colonial dependence” and strengthen their sovereignty and national security.

That intervention, the leader noted, stimulated development in agriculture, energy and infrastructure, which helped surmount socioeconomic challenges African nations faced decades ago.

Putin lauded the coordination between Moscow and African capitals on key global and regional issues, emphasising they remain insistent on a multipolar world order free from diktat.

“Russian-African relations are built on time-tested traditions of sincere friendship and mutual assistance, respect and equality, solidarity and trust,” he told the gathering.

The President expressed confidence that the decisions adopted and the agreements reached at the 2026 summit would lay a solid foundation for fruitful joint work for many years.
