Riverdale baseball coach Barry Messer announced his retirement on May 26 after 19 seasons and nearly 500 career victories.
Messer has guided the Warriors since the 2008 season. He was an assistant coach under Buddy Powers for six seasons before taking the reigns.

Compiling a 477-246 record with the Warriors, Messer led Riverdale to five state tournament appearances (all reaching the final four), nine district title and five region titles.
“For 19 years, Coach Messer has been the heart of our baseball program and one of the most respected athletic figures in our community,” Riverdale principal Tamera Blair said in a school release. “His dedication, leadership, and passion for student-athletes helped build a championship-caliber program that our school and community are incredibly proud of.

“Beyond the success on the field, he created opportunities for generations of players and helped develop exceptional facilities that will benefit our students for years to come. More importantly, he impacted countless young men through his mentorship, character, and commitment to doing things the right way. We are deeply grateful for his service, and his legacy will always remain a part of our school.”

Messer led Riverdale to a 28-17 record and berth in the Class 4A sectional in 2026 before falling to Ravenwood in the best-of-three series.
