The Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler experienced an unusual interruption during Saturday’s matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs when a fake green apple appeared on the ice. The bizarre incident caught the attention of both players and fans, with referee T.J. Luxmore adding to the moment by briefly showing the object to the rookie netminder.

According to Sportsnet, Fowler noticed the apple while focused on tracking the puck during the second period. After Luxmore picked it up, the official showed it to Fowler during a stoppage in play. “I’m used to tracking a black puck, not a green apple,” Fowler joked after the game. The goaltender also revealed that he had never experienced anything like it before. The incident was also shared by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on X.

The object had been thrown onto the ice with approximately 8:30 remaining in the second period. Fowler initially questioned what it was, while Luxmore jokingly identified it as a tennis ball before revealing its apple-like appearance. The referee also suggested he might have stopped play if the Maple Leafs had entered the offensive zone while the object was on the ice.

Fowler admitted that the incident caught him off guard but did not disrupt his performance. The 21-year-old finished with 26 saves as Montreal secured a 4-2 victory at Scotiabank Arena.
