Real Madrid have plans to sign a new midfielder this summer, but they have ruled out a move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. The Argentina international has been deemed too expensive, and thus, preparations are being made to seek an alternative signing.
Midfield is an area that has been a concern for Real Madrid ever since Toni Kroos left in 2024, and the issue only heightened when Luka Modric followed suit 12 months later. Aurelien Tchouameni did well in a defensive sense, but he needs someone alongside him that can dictate a game, which the retired Germany international was excellent at.

Fernandez was seen as a good option, and while he wanted to join, Chelsea priced out a move. It’s seen Real Madrid turn their attention to alternatives, and according to Vecernji (via MD), one of them is Petar Sucic.
Sucic, who joined Inter Milan last summer from Dinamo Zagreb, is off the back of an impressive first season in Italy, while he also did well at the 2026 World Cup. This has led to Real Madrid seeing him as a good option to strengthen in midfield, although it is also noted that Premier League clubs also have him on their list.
In terms of asking price, Inter are reportedly seeking €50-60m, which is less than half of the €140m that Chelsea want for Fernandez. Real Madrid will view this valuation with good eyes, and give that they have good institutional relations with the Nerazzurri, they would surely be in pole position to win this transfer battle if they made a move.

It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid decide to move for Sucic, for any other midfielder for that matter. Whoever is sought must be signed off by Jose Mourinho, who has been in charge of transfers since returning as manager earlier this week.
