Rams looking to turn renewed sense of urgency into consistent results

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams needed a response after consecutive heartbreaking losses, and Sunday’s 35-21 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders provided a much-needed step in the right direction.

The Rams showed urgency, energy and improved execution in building a commanding first-half lead against the Raiders. Now, the challenge is sustaining that mentality as Los Angeles looks to climb back into the NFC playoff picture.

Following the victory, McVay made it clear that the team’s response was encouraging, but the work is far from finished.

“I was really pleased with the sense of urgency, the fire, whatever you want to call it,” McVay said. “I thought that was reflected throughout the course of the week.”

After losses to the Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals that exposed offensive inconsistencies and costly mistakes, the Rams entered Week 7 needing more than encouraging words. They needed to show they could translate their preparation into results.

Against the Raiders, they delivered an offensive performance that featured balance between the run and pass games, while the defense made critical stops to help secure the win.

McVay credited the players for making a conscious decision to approach the week differently, emphasizing how challenging experiences can reveal a team’s character.

“We have to. I think the guys just made a choice and that’s what was great to see,” McVay said. “I think you learn the most when you go through some challenging experiences, certainly.”

With their tough start the Rams cannot afford to mistake one successful Sunday for a complete turnaround.

Los Angeles entered Sunday at 2-4, with its previous two defeats leaving the team searching for answers. The victory improved the Rams to 3-4, giving the team a much needed boost of confidence.

The offense showed what it can accomplish when its pieces work together. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes, connecting twice with tight end Davis Allen and once with wide receiver Puka Nacua.

Running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum each surpassed 90 rushing yards, giving the Rams a productive ground attack to complement their passing game.

That complementary football helped Los Angeles build a 28-6 halftime advantage.

However, a scoreless third quarter and second-half turnovers allowed the Raiders to threaten a comeback before Corum’s late touchdown run helped put the game away.

McVay acknowledged the adversity his team faced after halftime, including the self-inflicted mistakes that allowed Las Vegas to regain momentum. Those issues remain important areas for improvement as the Rams prepare for their next challenge.

“I thought our guys came out ready to go. I thought we had the right energy. I thought we had the right mindset,” McVay said. “I love the fact that we had to weather a little bit of adversity in the second half, some self-inflicted wounds.”

The Rams must learn to maintain their standard when momentum shifts. Against stronger opponents, turnovers and stalled possessions can quickly turn a comfortable lead into a loss.

McVay also highlighted the benefit of having a normal week of preparation after a season filled with scheduling challenges. He believes another week of consistent preparation presents an opportunity for the team to build on its performance.

“We have to improve and we have to have even greater urgency than last week,” McVay said. “I know we’re capable of doing it, players and coaches alike.”

That message should resonate throughout the locker room. The Rams have experienced enough adversity to understand that their margin for error is shrinking. Their talent remains evident, but talent alone will not fix inconsistent execution or prevent avoidable mistakes.

Sunday’s victory was a a big step forward. The Rams showed they can play with energy, establish the run and produce explosive moments offensively. Now they must demonstrate that those qualities can become consistent rather than occasional.

For McVay, the expectation is straightforward: improve every week, maintain accountability and refuse to become complacent after a win.

“I was really pleased with the sense of urgency,” McVay said. “You can’t let up at all. You have to continue to improve.”

The Rams finally delivered the response they needed in Week 7. The next test is proving they can carry that urgency forward when the stakes rise and the margin for mistakes gets even smaller.
