"Lessons to learn from today" – Post-match reaction to #B04RBL

RB Leipzig returned home empty-handed after a 2-0 defeat away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Bundesliga matchday 4.

…the performance:

• “It’s obvious that we cannot be pleased with the result. However, I’m of the opinion that we were the better team during the first half. Football is all about those little details. We weren’t far off from scoring. Instead, we then gave up possession unnecessarily in the 44th minute, failed to react accordingly in midfield and allowed them to deliver the cross. That’s what led to their opening goal.”

• “It’s little things that we need to improve on. We need to learn to play in every stadium with the same boldness that we showed during the first half, but also to not let our focus slip until the final whistle.”At this level, if you give your opponent a couple of chances, then you’ll concede. We conceded two easy goals today.”

…on Brajan Gruda:

• “Brajan suffered a knock to the hip. It became more and more painful and we didn’t want to take any risks with him. I don’t think that it’s anything serious.”

…the performance:

• “I think that we played well in the first half. We just didn’t reward ourselves for it, because we weren’t able to direct enough of our pressure towards goal. We’re maybe a bit more tenacious at home in that regard. We had set out to show a different side to ourselves on the road.” We then conceded a silly goal. The cross they played was perfect and Schick did exactly what he’s paid to do. He’s always in the box and those are exactly the sort of ball he wants to get on the end of. In the second half we once again didn’t pose enough of a threat on goal. Leverkusen punished us mercilessly. However, I don’t think it was all bad.”

…dealing with setbacks:

• “It’s obviously great when we’ve got the lead, we’re scoring goals and everything is going well. What also matters, however, is what we do when things aren’t going our way. That’s when you have to dig deep and lead the way. We’re still a young team. We’re maybe missing a bit of that nastiness that you need at times. We have to learn to do more to fight back. That’s something we saw in the Champions League recently as well.”

…the lessons learned from the defeat:

• “Our coach says it best: You win, you draw or you learn. Today, we learned something – or rather, there’s lessons that we need to learn from today.”

…the defeat:

• “Leverkusen are one of our competitors for the Champions League spots. Of course we wanted to take points home with us today. In my opinion, we played well for large phases of the game, but we made errors in how we defended in key moments. That’s what cost us in the end.”

…the details that made the difference:

• “It’s difficult to analyse moments like that immediately after full time. It’s something we’ll do again over the coming days. In a game like this, it’s small things that make the difference. You have to defend to the best of your abilities. That’s exactly what we didn’t do when needed.”

…the upcoming games:

• “I’m looking forward to getting to play against the best. That’s exactly what we worked hard for last season. We will make sure to savour our games in the Champions League. Of course there’s things we have to change in order to beat teams like that. Regardless of that, I’m simply looking forward to what’s still to come for us.”
