Let’s be real: Getting an Emmy nomination is a monster-size feat.
And Charlie Hunnam wanted to celebrate the major moment with his longtime love Morgana McNelis by his side. The actor—who received his first-ever nod for his titular role in Monster: The Ed Gein Story—and the jewelry designer attended the 78th Emmy Awards at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater on Sept. 14. For the big night, he wore an all-black ensemble to complement his trademark blonde locks while she donned a glamorous black gown with stunning beading down the sleeves. Facing some stiff competition, Hunnam is going up against The Beast in Me’s Matthew Rhys, Bait’s Riz Ahmed, Black Rabbit’s Jason Bateman and Beef’s Oscar Isaac in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category (see the full list of nominees here).
And he isn’t the only one from the show hoping to take home a trophy. Laurie Metcalf is also nominated for her supporting role in the series about the murderer and graver robber Gein.
This marks the third season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s true crime drama Monster, with the first two covering the lives of convicted killers Jeffrey Dahmer (Evan Peters) and Lyle and Erik Menendez (Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch) and the fourth about the mysterious case of Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty) premiering on Netflix Sept. 17. In fact, Hunnam credits McNelis with encouraging him to take the part of Gein.
“My partner had incredible conviction that this was an important thing to do,” the Sons of Anarchy star told E! News in October. “She’s a great fan of the psychoanalysts, so she understands shadow work and the value of staring into the abyss and confronting the darkness much more than I do. So she was an amazing support to me, saying, ‘You just got to go do this thing. You’ve got to enter the cave and face the dragon.'”

Still, they’ve established some rules about his work throughout their nearly two decades together.
“We’ve been together almost 20 years, and she got frustrated with me showing up and being a bit of a shell after doing a role,” he continued. “So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, ‘Here’s the rules of engagement, kid: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.’ Which is completely fair and really lovely.”
As a result, Hunnam said he took some time to visit Gein’s grave in Wisconsin, “which was a healing way to say goodbye and put a full stop at the end” of filming. Although, he admitted the voice wasn’t as easy to shake.
“I was slipping in and out of it all the time,” the 46-year-old confessed on Live From E!: Critics Choice Awards in January, “and she would say, ‘Dude, you have to stop at the voice. At breakfast, it’s a little too much.'”
