Passport bombshell in Thailand. Anutin revokes a prominent rabbi’s citizenship after investigators uncover 16 journeys using US nationality. Chabad-linked businesses face scrutiny, while Phuket braces for another mass anti-Israel protest on Saturday.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has stripped Thailand’s leading Chabad rabbi of his Thai citizenship as protests against Israeli influence intensify. Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, based in Thailand since 1993, lost his nationality over 16 journeys using his American citizenship. Meanwhile, investigators are probing more than 60 companies registered at one Bangkok address, suspected nominee businesses, land deals and financial transfers. The crackdown follows another citizenship revocation involving an Israeli businessman and fresh immigration action on Koh Phangan. With nationalist leader Sondhi Limthongkul preparing a major Phuket rally on Saturday, the dispute is escalating. Chabad is challenging the move as rising tensions threaten Thailand’s longstanding diplomatic and economic relations with Israel.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has revoked the Thai citizenship of a prominent Jewish religious leader amid mounting protests against Israeli influence. Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, head of Thailand’s Chabad-Lubavitch network, lost his nationality under an order signed on Wednesday.

The decision emerged on Thursday, ahead of a major anti-Israel demonstration scheduled for Phuket on Saturday. In parallel, Thai investigators are examining Chabad-linked companies, property holdings and financial transactions. The widening controversy has brought fresh scrutiny to Israeli interests and Thailand’s longstanding diplomatic relationship with Israel.

Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, signed the revocation order on 28 October. He invoked Section 19(2) of Thailand’s Nationality Act 1965. The government cited Kantor’s continued use of American nationality after becoming a naturalised Thai citizen. The decision followed findings submitted by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Interior Ministry cites 16 journeys using American nationality as grounds for revoking rabbi’s citizenship

According to the Interior Ministry, Kantor used his American nationality for 16 journeys involving Australia. His most recent recorded journey took place on 26 January 2026.

Consequently, officials concluded that he had breached conditions acknowledged when applying for Thai citizenship. The ministry also cited the risk of serious harm to the public interest.

Kantor obtained Thai citizenship through naturalisation under Section 10 of the Nationality Act. His naturalisation appeared in the Royal Gazette on 11 April 2013. Subsequently, he received his first Thai national identity card on 2 May that year. Investigators later established that he continued using his original American nationality during international travel.

The DSI supplied the information underpinning the decision. After reviewing those findings, the Interior Ministry determined that Kantor’s conduct justified revocation. Officials considered his continued use of American nationality incompatible with conditions acknowledged during naturalisation. Accordingly, the ministry exercised its statutory powers to withdraw his Thai citizenship.

Anutin defends citizenship order as scrutiny grows over Chabad activities and Israeli-linked businesses

Anutin defended the order at Parliament on Thursday. He insisted that officials must enforce Thai law firmly, regardless of the individuals involved. Separately, he referred questions about further proceedings to the Department of Provincial Administration. His intervention followed weeks of growing demands for action against alleged Israeli-linked business activities.

The revocation concerns Kantor’s nationality status rather than an established offence involving his religious activities. Nevertheless, its timing places the decision within a wider dispute over Israeli influence and foreign business ownership. Several government agencies are also investigating financial and property arrangements associated with Chabad-linked operations.

Kantor, widely known as Rabbi Yosef, has lived in Thailand for more than three decades. The American-born Orthodox Jewish leader arrived in Bangkok with his wife and daughter in 1993. Initially, he came to serve the country’s Jewish community. Over the following years, he became a leading figure in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement throughout Thailand.

His organisation provides religious services, kosher food, educational programmes and assistance to Jewish residents and international visitors. Additionally, its facilities host Sabbath gatherings, religious celebrations and community activities. Israeli tourists are among those using these services, particularly in destinations popular with younger international travellers.

Chabad’s international network faces scrutiny as Thai investigators examine dozens of registered companies

Chabad-Lubavitch is an international Orthodox Jewish movement headquartered in New York. It operates religious and community facilities across numerous countries. Although Israeli nationals use its centres extensively, the organisation is not an Israeli government agency. Its activities serve Jewish communities and travellers from different national backgrounds.

The citizenship decision has attracted attention beyond Thailand. It affects a longstanding religious leader with connections to Jewish communities and an international religious organisation. In response, Chabad has expressed regret over the revocation and reportedly begun challenging it through legal channels. The organisation has also indicated that its centres throughout Thailand will continue operating.

The nationality decision follows an expanding investigation into companies and properties associated with Chabad-related activities. These inquiries have brought the organisation under increasing scrutiny from Thai enforcement agencies. Moreover, they have become a central issue in protests demanding stronger action against alleged foreign business interests.

On 8 October, DSI officers joined other authorities in searching three Bangkok locations connected to Chabad-related operations. Investigators examined company registrations, financial transactions, donations and land ownership arrangements. The operation formed part of a broader examination of suspected nominee ownership and compliance with Thai business legislation.

One target was the office of Gan Chabad Co Ltd in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district. There, investigators discovered records showing more than 60 companies registered at a single address. Notably, some companies shared directors or shareholders. The findings prompted closer scrutiny of their ownership structures, registered activities and business arrangements.

Investigators examine nominee ownership, cemetery land deals and financial transfers linked to Chabad

As part of the inquiry, officials examined whether the company structures complied with Thai business and ownership legislation. Their investigation included possible nominee arrangements involving foreign interests. Thai law restricts certain foreign business activities and land ownership. Authorities are therefore examining whether any arrangements breached those restrictions or involved unlawful ownership structures.

The investigation also extended to property transactions involving a Jewish cemetery in Chachoengsao. On another front, officials examined property-related activities connected to Phuket. The Anti-Money Laundering Office reviewed financial transfers associated with the arrangements. Tax authorities also investigated potential liabilities arising from the business activities.

These investigations remain separate from Kantor’s nationality case. The financial and property inquiries concern suspected regulatory breaches rather than the American passport use cited in Wednesday’s order. Even so, the investigations have become central to the growing campaign against alleged Israeli influence in Thailand.

Protesters have demanded stronger action against foreign business interests, suspected nominee arrangements and alleged unlawful property ownership. The campaign has been particularly prominent in Phuket, where Israeli visitors form part of the international tourism market. Organisers have accused Israeli-linked interests of involvement in illegal businesses, nominee ownership and illicit financial activities.

Phuket protest organisers plan Saturday rally demanding action against alleged Israeli-linked businesses

Another major demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town. The rally, entitled Take Back Our Country, is planned from 4 pm until 10 pm. Organisers include the Phuket Land Protection Group, Reclaim Thailand and approximately 20 other networks. It follows earlier demonstrations targeting Israeli-linked interests and Chabad facilities.

Prominent figures expected to attend include Sondhi Limthongkul, the former People’s Alliance for Democracy leader. Other named participants include Pichit Chaimongkol, known as Tum KPT, and Akkarawut Kraisisombat, known as Tae Acheewa. Sondhi has emerged as a leading figure in the campaign against perceived Israeli influence. His involvement has given the demonstrations a broader political profile.

The organisers are demanding stronger enforcement against suspected illegal businesses and nominee ownership arrangements. They have also raised concerns about property transactions, foreign control and the movement of capital. Their campaign has placed Chabad-linked activities alongside wider complaints concerning Israeli nationals and foreign business interests.

However, Phuket investigators reported on 30 September that preliminary financial checks found no irregularities in the transactions examined. Officials separately identified building-use issues at Chabad House Patong. Those findings followed scrutiny of the organisation’s activities during an increasingly contentious period for Israeli-linked interests in the province.

September protests and cemetery investigation intensify scrutiny before a second citizenship revocation

The planned demonstration follows protests held in September during Jewish New Year celebrations. Demonstrators gathered outside Chabad House in Phuket, objecting to its activities and alleged Israeli influence. Earlier, on 10 and 11 September, hundreds gathered outside the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok and at demonstrations in Phuket.

Those gatherings marked an escalation in organised opposition to perceived Israeli influence. At the same time, the campaign increasingly combined criticism of Israeli government policy with complaints concerning Israeli tourists and businesses. Some demonstrations also focused directly on Jewish religious institutions.

On 16 September, authorities exhumed four bodies from a Jewish burial site amid questions concerning land use and regulatory compliance. The operation brought further attention to property holdings associated with Jewish organisations. In the following weeks, authorities intensified their examination of company registrations and property transactions. The DSI operation on 8 October became another significant development.

Kantor’s citizenship revocation was also preceded by another nationality case involving an Israeli businessman. On 1 October, Thai officials revoked the citizenship of a naturalised individual following findings concerning his continued use of an Israeli passport. Investigators also identified an undisclosed Uruguayan nationality.

Thai authorities expand checks on Israeli nationals as Chiang Mai and Koh Phangan face enforcement action

That decision, like Kantor’s case, involved nationality legislation applying to a naturalised Thai citizen. Both cases concerned the continued use of foreign nationality after naturalisation. Taken together, the decisions have brought renewed attention to the legal requirements imposed on naturalised Thai citizens.

Elsewhere, enforcement activity involving Israeli nationals has extended beyond Bangkok and Phuket to other tourist destinations. On 15 October, authorities conducted a multi-agency inspection of Chabad House in Chiang Mai. Officials reviewed its lease, operating licences and religious activities. The inspection found no legal violations.

Between 22 and 24 October, authorities also moved to revoke the visa of Israeli national Ensav Ashual on Koh Phangan. The action followed complaints involving threats, abusive conduct and unpaid charges. The case added to a series of enforcement operations involving Israeli nationals during October.

The developments have unfolded against the background of Thailand’s longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship with Israel. The two countries maintain established diplomatic ties, trade links and employment arrangements. Thai agricultural workers have played an important role in Israel’s economy for many years. Israeli visitors also contribute to Thailand’s tourism industry.

Gaza war and protests over Israeli influence complicate Thailand’s longstanding ties with Israel

Their presence is particularly visible in Phuket, Koh Phangan and other established tourist destinations. Chabad centres provide religious and community services to Jewish visitors, including Israelis. As a result, the organisation’s activities have become increasingly prominent in the wider controversy surrounding Israeli influence.

The Gaza war has added another dimension to relations between the two countries. Thai nationals were among those killed and abducted during the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023. Subsequently, the conflict became a prominent issue in international demonstrations and political debate.

In Thailand, opposition to Israel’s military actions has increasingly overlapped with campaigns concerning foreign business ownership and Israeli visitors. Research published by The Diplomat in September distinguished earlier pro-Palestinian demonstrations from newer nationalist protests. The latter placed greater emphasis on perceived foreign influence within Thailand.

Some demonstrators displayed explicitly anti-Jewish slogans. Others concentrated on alleged breaches of Thai business, immigration and property legislation. For its part, the Israeli Embassy has challenged fabricated accusations directed against Israeli citizens. Thailand’s foreign minister has also warned that violations of Thai law could damage bilateral relations.

The latest citizenship decision adds another issue to this increasingly complicated relationship. Kantor is American-born, while Chabad-Lubavitch is headquartered in New York. The movement serves Jewish communities and travellers from numerous countries, including Israel. Nonetheless, its facilities have become a focus of protests against perceived Israeli influence.

Kantor’s legal challenge follows nationality revocation as separate investigations into Chabad continue

Investigations into associated businesses have increased attention on the organisation’s operations. The government’s decision to revoke Kantor’s nationality follows weeks of demonstrations, enforcement operations and investigations involving Chabad-linked interests. The legal basis cited by the Interior Ministry, however, remains specific.

Officials relied on Kantor’s continued use of American nationality following naturalisation. The order was issued under Section 19(2) of the Nationality Act. Crucially, the ministry based its action on DSI information concerning 16 journeys involving Australia.

The case also brings the application of nationality requirements to other naturalised Thai citizens into focus. The earlier revocation involving an Israeli businessman provides a recent example of similar enforcement. Chabad’s reported legal challenge could now bring the ministry’s interpretation of those requirements before the courts.

The organisation’s response also matters because its religious facilities continue operating across Thailand. Those centres serve residents and international visitors independently of Kantor’s personal nationality status. In the meantime, the DSI’s investigations into companies and property arrangements remain active. Officials are examining business registrations, financial transfers, donations and ownership structures.

Any further enforcement action arising from those inquiries would involve separate legal findings. The investigations concern business and property compliance, not the passport use underpinning Kantor’s citizenship revocation. Still, the parallel inquiries have increased scrutiny of the organisation’s financial and property arrangements.

Attention is also turning towards Saturday’s demonstration in Phuket. Organisers are preparing another gathering focused on alleged Israeli influence and foreign business activities. The rally brings together several nationalist networks and prominent campaigners. It follows earlier protests outside Jewish religious facilities and demonstrations at the Israeli Embassy.

Thailand’s enforcement campaign widens as Phuket protesters prepare new demands over foreign ownership

For the Thai government, these developments involve several areas of enforcement. They include nationality legislation, immigration controls, business registration, land ownership and financial regulation. For Israel, the situation involves the treatment of its nationals, businesses associated with Israeli interests and institutions serving Jewish visitors.

The dispute also concerns Thailand’s relationship with the international Chabad movement. Its headquarters and leadership connections extend beyond Israel. Against this background, the government’s enforcement actions are attracting scrutiny from several directions. The nationality case, business investigations and protest campaign remain distinct developments.

Kantor’s legal challenge is expected to become the next stage in the citizenship dispute. Investigators are also continuing their examination of financial and property arrangements identified during the October operations. Saturday’s Phuket rally will provide another indication of the campaign’s public mobilisation.

Interior Ministry probes Israeli network of Chabad in Thailand with reports of southern land purchases

The immediate development remains Anutin’s decision to strip a religious leader of Thai citizenship after more than three decades in Thailand. The order follows DSI findings concerning his continued use of American nationality. With the revocation signed and a legal challenge reportedly under way, attention turns to the Department of Provincial Administration and the courts.

Meanwhile, the separate DSI investigations into Chabad-linked companies and property transactions continue. Saturday’s rally at Saphan Hin will bring the campaign’s leading figures together in Phuket. The organisers are demanding further government action against suspected nominee businesses, foreign property interests and alleged unlawful financial activities.
