Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the date for three byelections, including a North Vancouver riding that will be contested by his former deputy chief of staff.

On Sunday, Carney said there will be byelections on Monday, Aug. 31, in North Vancouver—Capilano, Beaches—East York in Ontario and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec.

The B.C. riding was held by Liberal Jonathan Wilkinson, who was named Canada’s ambassador to the European Union in the spring.

Earlier this month, Braeden Caley said he was leaving the Prime Minister’s Office to seek the nomination in North Vancouver—Capilano for the Liberals. Caley is from Richmond and has worked behind the scenes for the Liberals for about two decades. He was unopposed for the candidacy.

Also hitting the campaign trail in recent weeks are the Conservative’s Stephen Curran, a business lawyer who ran against Wilkinson in the last federal election, and Green candidate Shelley Luce.

The Beaches—East York riding was held by Liberal Nate Erskine-Smith for the past decade before he announced last month that he was leaving federal politics.

Chicoutimi—Le Fjord MP Richard Martel, who has held the riding for the Conservatives since 2018, stepped down earlier this month after being appointed to the Senate.

Elections Canada said early voting is open now through its offices, while advance voting will be open on Aug. 21, 22, 23 and 24 at assigned polling stations before election day on Aug. 31.
