Mason Heintschel has picked up right where he left off after a standout freshman campaign, turning in an impressive start to his sophomore season in the Steel City and establishing himself as one of the ACC’s top quarterbacks.
Can Heintschel continue his record-breaking start and help Pitt secure its first ACC road win of the season against a Virginia Tech team that has opened 4-0 under first-year coach James Franklin?

Pitt is coming off a 59-0 shutout win over Bucknell in Week 4, where Mason Heintschel became the first ACC quarterback to record at least six touchdown passes in multiple games in a season. Virginia Tech weathered nor’easter conditions to come from behind and win its ACC opener against Boston College.
One of Friday’s most intriguing matchups is at quarterback, where Ethan Grunkemyer and Heintschel will square off. Grunkemyer, a Penn State transfer, has thrown for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 74.3% of his passes in his first four starts at Virginia Tech. Heintschel has thrown for 1,191 yards and 14 touchdowns through four games, with his 14 scoring passes ranking fourth nationally.
