The Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, has demanded inclusion in the President Bola Tinubu administration’s N70,000 transport allowance for public workers.
The National President of the NUP, Godwin Abumisi, made the demand while speaking to journalists on Wednesday.
Recall that Tinubu had approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public workers following a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
The support is expected to commence in November, according to a statement by the NLC.
Reacting to the development, the NUP condemned the exclusion of pensioners from the relief announced by the government.
The union described the exclusion of pensioners as a reflection of the insensitivity of civil servants to the plight of their former colleagues who are now retired.
The union further lamented the non-payment of the N25,000 monthly palliative promised by the Federal Government since October 2023.
“Immediate reconsideration of pensioners’ exclusion from the N70,000 monthly transport allowance, with the Federal Government extending the benefit to eligible retirees or introducing an equivalent support measure that addresses their transportation costs,” the union stated.
The NLC had declared October 27, 2026 as the date for a nationwide shutdown over fuel prices and a demand for review of the minimum wage.
