New England Patriots quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant discussed how the addition of A.J. Brown will help with the continued development of quarterback Drake Maye.
Brown’s trade to the Patriots was one of the biggest storylines of the entire offseason. By making the move, the Patriots ensured that Maye would have a true No. 1 wide receiving target heading into the 2026 season. They also managed to pair him with another elite playmaker in former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs.

“It gives him a little bit of confidence knowing that he has someone who’s had success throughout his career in the NFL doing something that Drake excels at,” Grant said, via Sleeper HQ’s Carlos Lopez. …It’s just exciting for the entire offense… It dictates coverages and gives you favorable matchups across the board. So, I think everybody on offense is excited.”
Brown’s size and athleticism make him a tough player to defend against in man-on-man defense, which is an area the Patriots struggled in last season. Outside of Stefon Diggs, the Patriots’ receiving unit has remained intact from last season with Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III all still on the roster.
Adding Brown and Doubs to the mix should make the unit more dangerous than it has been in years.
