The world is being burdened by two important questions right now: 1. How to attain global peace? and 2. Does Drake Maye still know how to play football?

The New England Patriots were obliterated by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 35-6, on Sunday, raising more red flags about Maye. The Patriots played so poorly that Trevor Lawrence had more yards per completion than New England‘s final score.
The 24-year-old Maye went 14-of-25 for 199 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was sacked three times.

The third-year quarterback, who finished as runner-up for MVP last season and carried the Patriots to the Super Bowl, has inexplicably regressed. He, however, received a vote of confidence from Tommy DeVito, who contextualized Maye’s two interceptions in a report from the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

“If I’ve thrown a route over and over again, and usually it’s turned out good (in practice), it’ll turn out in our favor (in the game). It’s crazy to say, but the one time it doesn’t, it happened (in the game),” said DeVito.
“That play probably came up so many times, where (the defender was) neck and neck, and it ended up coming out in our favor. At the very worst, it was an incompletion. Of course, that one time we freaking threw it in the game, there it goes, it’s intercepted. So it’s just learning from those things and continuing to get better.”
It was a classy response from DeVito, who could benefit if Maye continues to play terribly. But instead of throwing his teammate under the bus and touting himself as the next man up, the 28-year-old backup expressed his support.
The Athletic’s Chad Graff noted that the Patriots are last “by a wide margin” in points scored per drive at only 0.97.
Still, DeVito fully believes in Maye.
“He’s in the building longer than anybody else. He’s the hardest worker,” added DeVito.

DeVito went 3-of-5 for 30 yards in his brief action against the Jaguars.
The Patriots will visit the Buffalo Bills in Week 4.
