Watch: Abigail Breslin on Recreating “Dirty Dancing’s” Iconic Lift
Dirty Dancing fans will certainly have the time of their lives with the upcoming sequel.
Especially because the new film has made sure to honor original star Patrick Swayze—who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at the age of 57— in a way his wife LisaNiemiSwayzeappreciates.
“I actually got to read the script,” the 69-year-old told Us Weekly in an interview published April 18. “I was very moved by it.”
Lisa—who was married to Patrick from 1975 until his death—noted that she was grateful for how the script treated his character Johnny Castle.
“I’ll be very curious to see how it comes about,” she continued. “I wish [them] the best of luck. They’ve been working on it [for] quite a while. And I can’t wait to see it.”
Another person who can’t wait for the film? Patrick’s Dirty Dancing costar JenniferGrey, who is set to reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the upcoming sequel.
“The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart,” Jennifer shared in a January press release, “as it has in the hearts of so many fans over the years,”
In fact, the 66-year-old had often “wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like,” adding that “it’s taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film.”

And while Patrick—who had briefly reprised his role in 2004’s Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights—sadly won’t be part of the new film, his own legacy will always live on, especially when it comes to the iconic lift from the ‘80s classic.
But amateur dancers should proceed with caution.
“Patrick is the only one who really anyone should try it with,” Jennifer told E! News in 2024, “because he was just such a good ballet dancer.”
“He was so used to lifting women and so strong,” she added. “By the end of the movie, I trusted him so much.”

Regardless of his strength, the move was one Jennifer had been particularly nervous about, admitting the only time she and Patrick did the lift together was when they filmed the iconic lake scene.
“I never rehearsed it,” Jennifer explained. “There was no room for a panic attack.”
Remembering how she was “really scared and protective” of her body at the time, Jennifer recalled giving a “hard no” to practicing the dance move off-camera.
“If you’ve ever tried it, you’d understand what it means to do it,” she said, joking she had “no choice” but to do it live on camera. “It was one of those game day things.”
