PASAN threatens total shutdown of Taraba Assembly over unimplemented CONLESS

Workers of the Taraba State House of Assembly have threatened to embark on a fresh indefinite strike on November 10, 2026, over the alleged failure of the state government and Assembly leadership to fully implement financial autonomy and the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure, CONLESS.

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, Taraba State Chapter, announced the planned industrial action in a notice issued by its State Executive Council following directives from the association’s national leadership.

The workers had embarked on an indefinite strike on November 14, 2025, as part of a nationwide action to demand the full implementation of financial autonomy and CONLESS across the 36 state Houses of Assembly.

According to PASAN, the strike has recorded significant progress in other states, with several state assemblies implementing CONLESS and passing and signing financial autonomy bills into law.

However, the association lamented that Taraba State remained behind in meeting the demands, particularly when compared with other states in the North-East region.

PASAN said its state leadership had continued to pursue dialogue as a means of resolving the dispute but expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the inadequate response of the leadership of the Taraba State House of Assembly.

Consequently, the association directed its members to commence a total strike from midnight on Monday, November 9, 2026, with the action expected to take full effect on Tuesday, November 10, if no concrete steps are taken to address their grievances.

The planned industrial action will involve the closure of the entire Assembly Complex and the Taraba State House of Assembly Commission, effectively shutting down all activities within the institutions.

The association also urged its members to remain united, peaceful and law-abiding while awaiting further directives from its State Executive Council.

State chairman, Comrade Hamidu Buba, alongside other officials of the association, said the planned strike is coming barely hours after learning that activities were paralysed in all five tertiary institutions in the state following an industrial action by lecturers over the alleged failure of the state government to meet their demands.

If the planned strike proceeds, the shutdown of the Assembly Complex and the House of Assembly Commission could further disrupt legislative and administrative activities in Taraba State.
