Paige Bueckers wanted to keep pushing through the end of Team USA’s World Cup run. Instead, the schedule forced a decision that was frustrating in the moment but made more sense once the stakes and workload were considered.
Bueckers played only 3 minutes in the gold-medal game against France after playing 20 minutes against Hungary and 17 against Spain. On Wednesday, she explained why her minutes dropped so sharply before the Americans finished their run with a fifth straight World Cup title.

The issue had been building as the tournament reached its final stretch. Bueckers said her patellar tendinitis flared up, and the schedule left Team USA with two back-to-backs during the closing games.
“There was two back-to-backs… Just wanted to be cautious, take that approach,” Bueckers told reporters.
That meant giving the knee a break even with a gold medal at stake. She still suited up against France, but the three-minute appearance was a sharp change from the workload she had handled earlier in the tournament.
The choice also fits a pattern Bueckers has dealt with since entering the professional ranks. She has previously said she has managed patellar tendinitis since high school, making workload decisions part of the job rather than a one-time concern.

Missing time during the biggest games was never going to feel good for Bueckers. Still, she did not describe the decision as something she regretted after seeing the bigger picture.
“Obviously the timing was frustrating, but being smart about it too, knowing that there’s a reason and purpose for everything.”
That balance showed in her World Cup numbers. Bueckers averaged 7.3 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds across six games, shooting 55.2% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range.
Her role changed when the schedule tightened, but the larger objective stayed the same. Team USA won the tournament, while Bueckers managed a flare-up without letting it become bigger than it needed to be.

Now, the focus is back on Dallas and the WNBA season. Bueckers is expected to return to the Wings after the World Cup. Her limited play in the final round was a precaution and not due to a long-term injury.
