The Oklahoma Sooners and the New Mexico Lobos will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT in an important game for the hometown team in Norman. Oklahoma is looking for a bounce-back performance after falling to 1-1 on the season with a loss to the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich.
It’s even more important for an offense that struggled to move the ball due to inaccuracy from quarterback John Mateer and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle’s unwillingness to use the traditional run game to set the tone. Oklahoma can play better than they did a week ago, but they need to show more poise and execution against a well-coached New Mexico team that’s off to a strong start.

The Sooners’ defense has been solid but needs to be more consistent and opportunistic. Last week against the Wolverines, the OU defense had chances for negative plays or turnovers but couldn’t fall on the ball or miss a tackle. Though the stat book might show 17 points allowed, one of those touchdowns came off an interception returned to the six-yard line.
The Sooners need to be better in all three phases moving forward. If they want to make the College Football Playoff, they have to get back on track with a strong performance against the New Mexico Lobos. There’s no time like the present.
