1. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has expressed his readiness to sacrifice himself to secure the release of the 46 pupils and teachers abducted in Orrire Local Government of the state on May 15. He also declared that Oyo State would never experience a tragedy similar to the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction. Makinde gave the assurance on Tuesday while addressing protesters at the government house.
2. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered immediate stay of execution for the judgment of the Federal High Court directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister African Democratic Congress and four other parties. The court ordered INEC not to proceed with the deregistration pending the determination of the substantive suit filed by the affected parties with the judgment of the Federal High Court.
3. A Federal High Court in Katsina has sentenced a woman, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of terrorism-related offences. Mukhtar was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit terrorism and aiding and abetting terrorist activities.
4. Gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, on Monday night, killing two soldiers and a police officer. The victims were on duty at the staff quarters of the institution when the attack occurred.
5. Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has announced new security measures aimed at curbing banditry and kidnapping. The measures include a statewide ban on the sale and transportation of fuel in jerrycans, as well as fresh restrictions targeting activities believed to aid criminal networks.
6. A Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail earlier granted to the presidential candidate of African Action Congress and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, who is being prosecuted for alleged criminal defamation. Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling on Tuesday, said Sowore was absent from court without providing any cogent reason.
7. Troops fighting to rid the nation of terrorists and other criminal elements have rescued 388 kidnapped victims, arrested 31 terrorists and neutralized 10 terrorists in various encounters in the theatres of Operation in the last one week. Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations made this known on Tuesday while giving an update of military offensive against criminal elements in Abuja.
8. The Federal Government has identified 470 gazetted and legally protected grazing reserves for the rehabilitation and resettlement of pastoralists, as part of efforts to end the era of cattle roaming the streets of Abuja, Lagos and other parts of the country. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, disclosed this on Tuesday, while speaking on the implementation of the National Dairy Policy Framework.
9. The Naira on Tuesday appreciated to N1,389 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,400 per dollar on Monday. However, the naira depreciated to N1,356.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM .
10. The Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and summoned lawmakers for an emergency plenary session to address pressing national issues, particularly the rising insecurity across the country. In a notice dated June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, senators were directed to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m.
