Roger Goodell has been working for the NFL since 1982. And he’s not leaving anytime soon. NFL owners on Sunday finalized a four-year contract extension that would keep Goodell, who’s been commissioner for 20 years, at the job until 2031.

Philly Phenom Strikes Again

That’s the number of goal contributions teenager Cavan Sullivan has made for the Philadelphia Union this season, beating the mark for a 16-year-old set by Freddy Adu in 2005. The American phenom scored in his third consecutive game on Saturday. He now has four goals and a team-leading seven assists through 23 games.
In 2024, at just 14, Sullivan became the youngest player in MLS history, breaking another record held by Adu, who was 13 days older when he debuted for D.C. United in 2004. Adu’s career never reached the stratospheric heights some American soccer fans envisioned. After transferring to Portuguese side Benfica in 2007, he made just 11 appearances for the club in four years, spending most of his time on loan to smaller clubs. Sullivan has his own European aspirations. His contract with Philadelphia includes an agreement to transfer him to Manchester City when he turns 18 on Sept. 28, 2027.

Western Michigan Moves On

“Ultimately, the refs did not cost [us] this game.”
—Western Michigan football head coach Lance Taylor, speaking Sunday about his team’s controversial last-second loss at 16th-ranked University of Michigan. The Wolverines had seemingly lost the game 12–7 to the Broncos when quarterback Bryce Underwood’s pass sailed out of bounds with no time remaining, according to the TV replay clock. But after review, officials determined that one second remained in the game, giving Michigan another chance to score. Underwood threw a Hail Mary for a touchdown, and the Wolverines won 13–12.
Speaking from Kalamazoo the morning after the game, Taylor and university president Ross Kavalhuna refused to blame the officials or the Big Ten’s review process, with Kavalhuna instead saying the difference between the official and broadcast clocks was “just a discrepancy.” He added: “I will say I’ve looked into this pretty closely, and I used to be a federal prosecutor. I don’t discern anything unfair or untoward in this process.”
