Watch: New Met Gala 2027 Theme Revealed After John Galliano Controversy
The first Monday in May will look a bit different this year.
That’s because the 2027 Met Gala has unveiled a more casual theme.
Months after John Galliano withdrew from the event amid growing controversy, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition—”extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”—put together by Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton, Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben.
“I didn’t have a plan B,” Bolton shared with Vogue Nov. 5. “It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily.”
The theme will ask those in attendance Met Gala on May 3 to lean into the elevated everyday attire: T-shirts, jeans and sweatshirts.
“I wanted it to be as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John show would have been,” Bolton continued. “That was really important to me: to come up with an idea that wasn’t a substitute. And it had to have some sort of contemporary resonance.”
Following the Met Gala on May 3, the extraORDINARY exhibition will open to the public from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028.
Bolton’s announcement comes two months after Galliano stepped away from the Met Gala, which was planning to honor his work, due to ongoing backlash over his past antisemitic comments.

“After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,” Galliano shared in an Aug. 31 Instagram message. “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.”
“I understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture,” he added. “It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one’s conduct over time.”

Following Galliano’s announcement, Vogue‘s Anna Wintour addressed the fashion designer’s departure.
“I believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support,” Wintour said. “His soaring imagination, fed by a lifetime of curiosity and research, is matched by his exceptional craft. Cut, fit, the evocative line of a bias-cut dress, color—he’s a master of it all. Without one or the other, if his technique wasn’t equal to his storytelling talents, he wouldn’t be the premier couturier of his generation. But he most certainly is.”
“The way that Christian Dior called Cristobal Balenciaga ‘the master of us all,’ a generation of designers have looked to Galliano as the greatest,” she added. “His impact reverberates across generations, not least of all with Dior’s current creative director Jonathan Anderson, who calls Galliano one of his heroes.”
