Watch: VMAs Producer Reveals Story Behind Taylor Swift’s Artist Director Honor
It’s nice to have a friend in Taylor Swift—just ask Nelly.
The “Ride Wit Me” rapper detailed his longstanding friendship with the “Patient Zero” singer, sharing how she spontaneously asked him for a “really big favor” during her 2011 Speak Now Tour that ended up to be quite the big payday.
“That woman called me one night just out the blue and said, “‘Yo, Nelly. Listen: Me and my friends, we made a routine to ‘Hot in Herre’ last night,'” he recalled during an Oct. 29 appearance on The Breakfast Club. “She said, ‘I got two shows in Houston tomorrow and the next day. Can you come down to Houston and just perform it?'”
Though Nelly, 51, “would have did it for free,” he said Swift, 36, offered to cover all his travel expenses and accommodations, as well as what she thought was a small appearance fee as to not “disrespect” him for his time.
“She said she don’t really have a budget,” Nelly continued. “She said, ‘But I will send my plane. I will get your room and all of that—and we only have $50,000.'”
Not only was it not a dilemma for Nelly to accept, but he also had an idea on how Swift should deliver the cash. As he remembered asking her, “‘Can you put that in a McDonald’s bag?'”
Sure enough, the “Country Grammar” artist was given a McDonald’s bag with $50,000 in cash at the show, with Swift also setting aside the presidential suite at a nearby hotel and her private jet for him to use at his discretion.
“We never saw the room,” Nelly admitted. “We stayed at the show and went back to the airport.”
As for Swift’s routine? He added with a laugh, “I never saw it.”

Since then, the two have continued to stay in touch. In fact, Nelly and his wife Ashanti were amongst the 1,000 guests who witnessed Swift tie the knot with Travis Kelce at New York City’s Madison Square Garden in July.
“I thought a lot of it was just celebrities going to a celebrity wedding,” Ashanti told The Breakfast Club, “but they know mad people.”
Added Nelly, “People forget how long she’s actually been in the business. She’s been in th business for a long time, and at the top of it, and when you’re like that, you make a lot of friends.”
