Nearly a year to the day after podcaster Pablo Torre reported a secret deal between the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard allowing the team to circumvent the NBA salary cap, the league revealed the results of its investigation. It banned owner Steve Ballmer from the league for one year and stripped the team of five first-round picks.

Transfer Spending Hits Another Record

$4.7 billion
That’s how much the 20 clubs in the English Premier League spent collectively on player moves in the summer transfer window, which closed Tuesday. The figure represents an 11% increase from last year and more than a 300% increase from five years ago. Despite the league’s attempts to limit spending, increased revenues have given the biggest clubs more flexibility to grab players.
This summer’s record spending levels are larger than the combined outlay of the remaining Big Five European leagues—Spain’s LaLiga, Germany’s Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1, and Italy’s Serie A combined—that spent just $3.8 billion on player transfers.

“Wherever he buys, he wins.”

—Angels icon Mike Trout on incoming owner Stan Kroenke. Trout, who has long professed his comfort playing in Anaheim, said an ownership change was “needed.” His talents have been somewhat obscured on a national level because of the Angels’ extended losing ways during the Arte Moreno era.
After hearing the news of the pending sale, Trout called an unnamed Rams player to get his take on Kroenke and received a positive review. Every one of the major pro sports teams controlled by Kroenke has won a league title under his ownership, and his Rams are the current favorites to win Super Bowl LXI.
