Continuity was largely expected to be the silver lining for Maryland baseball after three consecutive disappointing seasons. But days before the transfer portal officially opens, that belief has proven false.
Infielder Michael Iannazzo and pitcher Jake Yeager announced Thursday that they are entering the transfer portal, becoming the program’s 11th and 12th departures. The Terps had just six portal exits last offseason.
While Iannazzo only received 31 at-bats this year, he was ruthless with his plate appearances. The redshirt sophomore logged an impressive .355 batting average, highlighted by his four-hit performance during Maryland’s 11-7 victory over Rutgers to avoid a sweep.

Yeager’s stint as the Sunday starter was relatively short-lived after he allowed 12 runs during the Terps’ West Coast trip. But his transition to a midweek role proved wise, as he produced four consecutive scoreless outings. Still, the former top-100 recruit never lived up to the billing during his time in College Park.
The nation’s 22nd-ranked offense loses 34.3% of its runs batted in, including a pair of young phenoms. The departure of Maryland’s top arm Cristofer Cespedes doesn’t help a shaky pitching staff either.
With over a month remaining before the transfer portal closes, the Terps will need to avoid any more significant exits ahead of a critical 2027 season.
