The Chicago White Sox have been slumping and their lead atop the American League Central standings has been dwindling, then a lot changed Saturday night.

They were one out away from a fifth consecutive loss in St. Louis when Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer for a 4-3 lead that held up.
Earlier, the White Sox also got some help from the Twins, who beat the second-place Guardians 4-3 in Minnesota. The comeback win has Chicago’s division lead back to 1 ½ games over the Guardians.
The White Sox and Guardians begin a three-game series Monday night in Cleveland.

— The Padres held on for a 7-6 win in San Francisco for a six-game winning streak that increased for the third NL wild card to 1 ½ games over the Diamondbacks.
— The Rangers beat the Diamondbacks 6-2 in Phoenix to slice the Astros‘ AL West lead to one game.

— After clinching a playoff berth Friday, the Rays added to the AL East lead Saturday with a 3-2 home win over the Astros and the second-place Yankees being slaughtered by the Mets at Yankee Stadium.
— The NL East race looks about over with the first-place Braves beating the second-place Phillies in the first two games of a weekend series in Atlanta. The Braves blew put the Phils 12-2 on Saturday night after rallying for a 6-5, 11-inning win Friday.
— The Cubs beat the Pirates 4-3 at Wrigley Field to go a game up on the Phillies for the first NL wild-card position.
