Watch: Jack Nicholson, 88, Seen in Rare Photo With Kids Lorraine and Ray
Jack Nicholson‘s life these days is as good as it gets, according to Michael Douglas.
The Basic Instinct star, who produced Nicholson’s 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, shared a rare update on his longtime friend, confirming that the 89-year-old has retired from acting.
“He’s not working anymore,” Douglas said during a recent event in Wales for his memoir One Helluva Ride, according to The Independent. “He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.”
“I still see him, but he is fine,” the 82-year-old continued. “He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers.”
Still, Douglas “would have liked to have acted with Jack.”
“It happens,” he added of Nicholson’s retirement. “He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand.”
While Nicholson has never publicly announced his retirement, the three-time Oscar winner hasn’t starred in a movie since the 2010 rom-com How Do You Know. In recent years, he’s made scarce cameos on Saturday Night Live‘s anniversary specials, with him briefly appearing on camera last year to introduce Adam Sandler‘s musical performance.
“The movie business is the greatest business, but I only want to do films that move people, films about emotions and people,” Nicholson told Vanity Fair in 2013, explaining that he’s less driven to “be out there any more.”
But for the notorious flirt, something’s gotta give.

“There were points in my life when I felt oddly irresistible to women. I’m not in that state now, which makes me sad,” Nicholson quipped, explaining that it “doesn’t feel right” to “hit on” women at his age. “Now I don’t have any hair below my sock line, and that means you’re getting old, Jackie boy. It comes out of my ears instead.”
In fact, the Shining star—who dated Anjelica Huston, Rebecca Broussard and Lara Flynn Boyle after divorcing ex-wife Sandra Knight in 1968—isn’t too optimistic about finding love in his golden years.
“I would love that one last romance, a real romance,” he added, “but I’m not very realistic about it happening.”
And Nicholson isn’t the only screen icon to have stepped away the spotlight. Read on for more stars who left Hollywood.

DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi have since moved to the Cotswolds, deciding to stay put in November 2024 after Donald Trump‘s reelection, the talk show host told to Richard Bacon in a July 2025 conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham.”It’s absolutely beautiful,” she gushed about the English countryside, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” DeGeneres continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
