Watch: See Meryl Streep’s Hilarious Response About Aging 20 Years After Devil Wears Prada
Meryl Streep thinks Miranda Priestly’s aging is moving at a glacial pace.
Two decades after originating the fictional editor-in-chief of Runway magazine in The Devil Wears Prada, the three-time Oscar winner believes fans will be pleasantly surprised by the movie’s sequel.
When it comes to what viewers will find most shocking about seeing Miranda 20 years later, though, Meryl quipped to E! News Creator Cam host Erin Lim Rhodes at the New York premiere of the film April 20, “How young she is!”
All jokes aside, the 76-year-old—donning a red leather Givenchy cape dress—credited the movie’s supporters for the enthusiasm that brought her, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt back together for The Devil Wears Prada 2, out in theaters May 1.
“The fans told us what this movie was,” she continued. “We knew it was great and we thought it was fun. But a lot of great, fun movies don’t move the way this did, on a trajectory to decades later.”
As for why Meryl herself was intrigued by returning to the character of Miranda? She previously noted the ever-changing landscape of fashion magazines.
“I was interested in the business part of it,” the Mamma Mia! alum told Vogue in an interview published April 7, “that thing of carrying the weight of many, many people’s jobs, running a big organization, keeping it going somehow.”

“With this one, I thought, ‘Well, where are they going to go?’” she continued. “Now that everything’s disintegrating, now that these institutions are being undermined or exploded in a way that who knows what is happening in the world right now—I wondered what they were going to do. And I do think they’ve located something true about the business now.”
Plus, Meryl considered Vogue’s longtime editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who the character of Miranda is reportedly based on.
“I did think honestly about Anna,” she shared, “and tried to imagine what it was like to carry her responsibility and to be as interested in the world and curious as she must have to be. That’s the key, I think, to being alive: Always breaking new water. Always breaking the waves.”
And as Meryl put it, “We’re not done yet.”
Of course, Meryl’s Givenchylook isn’t the only stunning fashion moment she has had during the Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour. Read on to see what else she, Anne and her other castmates have donned during the movie’s events.
