A 45-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly bear-spraying and fighting a group of cricketers over the weekend at a Vancouver park, leaving one of the players with a broken arm.

At about 6 p.m. on Saturday, Vancouver police were called to Connaught Park in Kitsilano about a man disrupting a game of cricket.

“A game was underway when the suspect allegedly walked across the pitch and repeatedly interrupted the play,” said VPD Const. Darren Wong in a news release Monday. “Players and spectators asked him to leave, at which point the suspect allegedly became aggressive, shouting and swearing.”

The suspect allegedly punched a 37-year-old player and bear-sprayed five others before taking off. As players followed, he allegedly turned around several times and continued to bear-spray them.

The same player was then punched again and tackled to the ground, and he broke his arm in the fall.

Several witnesses called police and a suspect was arrested. He has been released with a promise to appear in court at a later date. The incident remains under investigation.

The victim was treated in hospital and released.
