As Ben Stokes’ side prepares to host New Zealand at Lord’s in the 150th Test match, with the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy on the line, grey clouds are gathering over north London.
For seam and swing bowlers on both sides, including Matt Henry and the recalled Ollie Robinson, the conditions could offer plenty.
But the question is how much uninterrupted cricket the skies will actually allow.

There is a 45% chance of rain on the opening day. Thick cloud cover is expected throughout with spells of light rain likely arriving during the afternoon session. Temperatures will sit between 11°C and 18°C. The overhead conditions should suit the seamers handsomely, provided play is not stopped for too long.

This is the day the groundstaff will be watching most anxiously. Rain probability jumps to 65%, making it the most weather-affected day of the match. Steady, intermittent drizzle is forecast across both the morning and afternoon sessions, with repeated cover delays a real possibility. Temperatures will range from 12°C to 17°C.
A noticeable improvement. The rain probability drops sharply to 20%, and while a brief morning shower cannot be completely ruled out, sunshine is expected to break through after the lunch interval. Temperatures will reach a high of 19°C with a low of 10°C — a much more inviting prospect for a full day’s play.

The pick of the five days. Only a 10% chance of rain, with bright sunny intervals and minimal cloud cover forecast. The pitch may well dry out under the sun, creating the best batting surface of the match. Temperatures will climb to 21°C, dropping to 13°C overnight.
A largely clear morning and afternoon, but a 35% rain probability late in the day means a tense finish could be complicated by the weather. If the match runs into the final session, approaching low-pressure systems may bring evening showers to London. Temperatures will be between 12°C and 20°C.

There are significant chances of rain disruption at Lord’s during the 1st England vs. New Zealand Test match.
A 150th Test at Lord’s deserves five full days of cricket, and the forecast suggests it may not get them, at least not without interruption.
Day 2 in particular looks genuinely problematic, and losing significant chunks of the second day of a Test can make it difficult to recover.

England’s recent winters have been difficult, and there is a hunger about this home summer that makes the weather all the more frustrating as a variable. Lord’s in early June is a wonderful stage, but the weather just needs to cooperate.
