Despite having the MLB’s second-largest payroll ahead of the 2026 season at $370 million (Dodgers: $397 million, according to Fangraphs), the Mets are currently on a 10-game skid, which ranks among one of their longest in franchise history. They are two games under the NL East’s fourth-place team, the Philadelphia Phillies, and are 6.5 games back from the division leader, the Atlanta Braves.
While star Juan Soto hit the IL with a right calf strain, not many people expected the second-most expensive team in baseball to start as slowly as they have. New York began the season with a strong 11-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and, since then, has only won five more games.

In the modern era of baseball, the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies hold the unfortunate record for the longest losing streak, which spanned 23 losses in a row. They finished in last place in the National League that year, when it totaled eight teams. Prior to them, the Louisville Cardinals lost 26 straight games in 1889.
