LIV Golf, the PGA Tour rival once bankrolled by the Saudi PIF, is on life support. The league, which filed for Chapter 11 in September after losing PIF funding, planned to emerge from bankruptcy with $300 million in financing from BC Partners Credit. Under the deal, players would hold most of the equity, and BC would own almost half of the league. But that deal is now dead, a source tells Front Office Sports.

LIV Golf’s $300 million deal with BC Partners Credit to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy is off.

“This version is not going to be signed,” a source with knowledge of BC’s operations told Front Office Sports.

BC Partners was set to provide $300 million of financing for LIV as part of the restructuring support agreement (RSA) outlined in bankruptcy filings. Players would have been the majority equity holders in “LIV 2.0,” but BC would have owned nearly half of the new league.

There was an Oct. 25 deadline from BC for a “requisite number of players” to commit to LIV 2.0, and a separate Oct. 30 deadline from the Saudi PIF, the largest creditor in LIV’s bankruptcy, for a decision on whether LIV would move forward or wind down operations. Both dates passed without announcements from any of the parties involved.

The Financial Times first reported BC was “dropping its bid to relaunch LIV,” leaving the league “to seek a liquidation of its remaining assets.”

LIV has its next bankruptcy hearing on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET, when lawyers had been expected to update Judge Michael Kaplan on next steps regarding a relaunch or shutdown of the league. It’s still unclear whether LIV will wind down operations completely. BC is “not out completely,” the source told FOS, “just not under this version.” However, it is “too early to say” what BC would need to see from LIV to reengage, the source said.

LIV CEO Scott O’Neil called BC Partners Credit CEO Ted Goldthorpe a “white knight” last month, as the league transitioned away from its Saudi funding.

Bryson DeChambeau was the most notable player publicly supporting LIV 2.0, although it’s not known whether he officially signed on for the league’s next iteration. A source with knowledge of LIV’s operations claimed to FOS that a “critical mass of players had been achieved last week.”

Jon Rahm reached a settlement to exit LIV, and this week said returning to the league “wasn’t really ever much of a consideration.” Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Ian Poulter, David Puig, Adrian Meronk, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, and Graeme McDowell were among the other notable players to also announce they would not return to LIV.

LIV Golf could not be reached for comment.

    Breaking Down an NIL Deal

NIL has created new opportunities for college athletes, but navigating this evolving landscape involves more than signing a brand deal. From understanding taxes and budgeting to planning for the future, financial education is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation.

In this episode of FOS Explains, presented by New York Life Investment Management, we explore how NIL deals come together and the role financial planning can play in helping athletes and their families navigate these new sources of income. Theresa Gralinski, head of the Advisor Advancement Institute at New York Life Investment Management, shares why building sound financial habits early can make a difference long after an athlete’s playing career ends.

    The Buck Kristaps Here

    $218,341

That’s how much Kristaps Porziņģis is reportedly losing each game he sits out for the Warriors. Porziņģis signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with Golden State in the offseason and is due $20 million this season. But the oft-absent center left the team before training camp with a medical issue and hasn’t returned. The Warriors changed his status from “general illness” to “not with team,” meaning his absence isn’t excused. Under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, players are contracted for 91.6 games—82 during the regular season and up to 9.6 during preseason. They can therefore be fined 1/91.6th of their annual salary for every game they are away from the team.

    Not a Dream Job

“It’s not a job that gives you love back.”

—Atlanta Dream co-owner and former WNBA All-Star Renee Montgomery discussing the open league commissioner role. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced her retirement after seven years in the top job—during which the league expanded to 15 teams, viewership and attendance grew, and salaries soared. During that same stretch, Engelbert was taken to task by players and fans for insufficiently navigating culture wars.

Montgomery told Front Office Sports that WNBA commissioner is a thankless job: “Somebody is always going to be mad.” Nonetheless, she has friends up for the post and says she’s cautioned them: “‘Are you sure you wanna enter that? Because it’s no joke.’”
